Start Lifting Simple in 2017

We all know New Year’s resolution time is upon us.  For serious gym rats, it’s the worst time of the year.  The gyms get filled with lost souls doing bicep curls in the squat rack in between texts.

Then, they get sore and bored.  They stop showing up until the next warm day when they are reminded of swimsuit season.  Some quit completely.

One of the reasons people quit is because they overthink it, and therefore overwhelm themselves.  Should I do more cardio?  How many sets?  I don’t want to get too big.  Should I go on this new p***y diet?

I am going to tell you what I would do if I were just trying to get started.  Full disclosure:  I am not a personal trainer, doctor, or nutritionist; I have no certifications.  What I have are the pain and experience of 20+ years of hard training starting as a gangly nothing.

For starters, concentrate on lifting.  This will trigger your manhood.  But train with the mentality of a weightlifter, not a bodybuilder.

Unless you are competing, bodybuilding is a non-functional vanity project which leads to overtraining.  Your progress is based on aesthetics rather than tangibles.

If your lifts are increasing, you are getting stronger.  Muscle has to grow; it may grow slowly, but it has to grow.  This is tangible progress, not wondering if your arm looked bigger yesterday than today while you were driving home after preacher curls.

Training like a weightlifter/powerlifter will also make you functionally stronger.  Professional bodybuilders are not functional.

They are very strong, but they are so overblown and tight that all they can really do is lift and flex.

I would focus on 4 major lifts separated into 4 separate days.  The major lifts, or powerlifts are squat, bench press, military press, and deadlift.  These are all barbell exercises.

I can already hear the candy-ass excuses about bad backs and having to leg press instead of squat and deadlift.  Bull***t!

Unless you have had a major back injury, you can do these lifts.  You know why most people don’t squat or deadlift?  Because it’s tough!

I know this because I once made excuses.  Truth is I didn’t want to face what I had to face.  Now I can’t live without either.

Yes, you will tweak your back and knees occasionally.  That’s life in the gym.  But, you will be strong!

So, I would do squats day 1, bench press day 2 (throw in 3 sets of pull-ups after), off day 3, military press day 4 (throw in 3 sets of dips after), and deadlift day 5.  Then take two days off.

I like squats and deadlifts at opposite ends of the week because they require the most effort and use similar muscles.  After each workout do three sets of any type of abdominal exercise.

Basic abdominal stuff is fine:  sit-ups, crunches, leg lifts, ab-wheels, whatever.  It doesn’t have to be elaborate.  It just has to be done.

On off days, stretch, and move a bit.  Go for a walk or hike, ride a bike, or play with your kids in the yard.  If you are feeling like you need to do something more, sprint.  Don’t jog.

Now that we have a basic game plan, you may ask what weight to start with.  Well, before you touch a bar get a good stretch.  Be engaged.  We all have a tendency to go through the motions with stretching until we get hurt.

Now that you are stretched, do a set or two with super light weight.  It can be just the bar.  Just get warm; don’t burn strength.  Through trial and error, find a weight that is challenging, but you can confidently do for 10 reps.  Do 3 sets of 10 reps at that weight.

If you complete 3×10, go up 5 lbs. the following week.   That’s 5 TOTAL lbs., not 5 lbs. on each side of the bar (the 2.5 lb. weights are your friends).  I’d rest two minutes between major lift sets, and thirty seconds to one minute on everything else.

This phase is just to get your muscles, connective tissue, and nervous system used to lifting.  I’d do it for three weeks.  Then in week 4, test how much you can lift for 1 rep on each major lift.  Now you have a base to measure your progress.

The following week stretch, warm up, and do 5 sets of 5 reps with 75% of your 1 rep max on each major lift.  So, if your 1-rep max on a given lift is 200 lbs., you would start at 150 lbs. for 5×5.

If you complete the 5×5, go up 5 lbs. the following week.  At first, this will seem too easy, but be patient.  The time will come when you are struggling to complete this, and eventually hit the wall.

The point is you are continually progressing in weight.  I keep a log to track progress.  This is my simple beginner variation of Bill Starr’s 5×5 program.

As the load gets heavier, don’t be afraid to rest an extra minute or two between major sets.  Anymore than 4 minutes cools me off.  This may not sound like a lot of volume.  It’s not!

The idea is to do the basics, get stronger, increase testosterone, be fit, then get the f***k out of the gym.  Go enjoy being in shape and the confidence that comes with it.

You MUST get to the gym and stick to it to see progress though.  Unless you are really sick or in an emergency, get your lifts in.

Things come up.  If pressed for time, do the major lifts, and skip the abs, pull-ups, and dips that day.  There will be days you don’t want to go.  You will ALWAYS feel better after the workout than when you got there.

If you are obese I would still get started the same way, but I would go on Vince Gironda’s steak and eggs diet.  Look it up.

If you are not severely overweight, I would tell you to read https://www.anabolicmen.com.  This will teach you to eat like a man.  Forget the fitness magazines who just want to sell you shakes loaded with estrogenics.

You may be wondering what to do when you hit the wall going up in weight, and can no longer complete 5×5.  You just get started and stay tuned, Nancy…Talk soon.

PS:  I recommend anyone who does not know how to do these lifts watch some Youtube videos.  Like a batting stance or golf swing, everyone is different in where they should put their feet and grip.

A lot of it is personal comfort.  The main thing is keep your back straight.  Like a pitcher, always repeat your mechanics perfectly whether doing a warm up or work set.  This will decrease injuries.

Ben Carson Gets the Joe Frazier Treatment

Ben Carson along with other black conservatives on the national seen gets the same treatment from the left as Joe Frazier got when he was fighting Muhammad Ali in the 1970s.

I began noticing this during the 2012 Republican Primary when Herman Cain was leading in the polls driven mainly by the support of the supposedly “racist” Tea Party.  I have seen it again in the latest political cycle with the emergence of Ben Carson.

For those of you who don’t know, Muhammad Ali was stripped of the heavyweight championship and his boxing license in 1967 for refusal to enter the armed services.  Joe Frazier claimed the vacated title in 1968.

In spite of his undefeated record, Frazier’s title was disputed until he beat Ali in “The Fight of the Century” in 1971.  Leading up to the fight, Frazier lobbied the Nixon administration to allow Ali to obtain a boxing license so they could fight.

He even gave Ali cash to help him stay afloat during the process.  Ali then turned around and hit Frazier with insults of being an “Uncle Tom”.  There is no greater insult by one black man to another than that.

Throughout their three-fight rivalry, Ali portrayed Frazier as the white man’s champion; he even knocked his dark complexion and features calling him a gorilla.

Frazier was actually apolitical and wanted to be everyone’s champion.  To this day, though the media doesn’t openly condone the insults, several rationalize it as Ali selling the fights.

Ali died regretting it and Frazier died without having completely let it go.

Fast forward to today.  The media, funded by the left paints anyone critical of President Barack Hussein Obama as a racist.  But, it’s always open season on black conservatives like Ben Carson.

The left now has their panties in a bunch over the appointment of Carson by President-Elect Donald Trump as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development.

They claim he is not qualified based on his lack of experience in such a position.  They do have a point.

However, he did come from very humble beginnings in Detroit to become one of the premier neurosurgeons in the world.  So, he knows something about succeeding in the face of adversity.

If the man can separate twins conjoined at the head, is it a stretch to think he can handle HUD?  The real problem the left has with Carson aside from him being a Trump appointee is that just like Cain in 2012, he is the wrong kind of black man for their agenda.

Guys like Carson and Cain rose above racism and adversity to become great American success stories.  However, because they preach the freedom of accountability rather than the hidden enslavement of built-in excuses and entitlement ideology, they are very dangerous to the left-wing agenda.

The left subtly paints black conservatives as somehow being “less black” because they don’t fall in line with their lies.  Their Marxist cohorts in the media are all too happy to play along.

Frazier was unsubtly painted this way by Ali, and his media worshippers were all too willing to enable this with their self-righteous rationalization that he was just selling the fights.

I had a conversation with a respected black colleague about Ben Carson during the recent campaign.  She said Carson “doesn’t even know he’s black”.

People like Ben Carson, Herman Cain, and Justice Clarence Thomas should be beacons to all Americans, but especially to the black community.  But the left has woven their lies so deep into this community’s minds that just like Frazier (though he’s more highly respected) these guys never really get their due acknowledgement.

While agitators like Al Sharpton and thug rappers who call fellow black Americans “n*****s and w****s” are given platforms and glorified, people like Carson get the Joe Frazier treatment.  Talk soon.

‘Tis the Season to Stand Up for Your Faith

Invites have gone out for office “holiday” parties.  Cashiers are wishing customers a happy “holiday”.  Commercials advertise “holiday” sales.

What holiday is it?  4th of July?  Columbus Day?  Festivus?  St. Frosty Solstis Rudolph Day?

Oh!  It’s Christmas?  That’s right, Christmas-the worst kept secret in America.

Why has Christmas become such a taboo word?  It’s because the media and advertisers are a bunch of Godless ACLU panderers who have bought into the idea that the word is somehow offensive.

When they have to they will say the word, but by watching television or walking around the mall you would think Christmas was a celebration of snow, wrapping paper, eggnog, and gluttony.

Christmas gained it’s original traction due to what it really stands for:  the birth of the Savior of the world, Jesus Christ.  Hence the word:  CHRISTmas.

I have heard numerous people over the years complain that the word Christmas has been phased out at this time of year.

So, what can we do about it?  Just as I talked in a prior article about doing our part to make America great again, let’s as Christians do subtle little things.

For starters don’t participate in the secularization of Christmas.  Pull the kids out of communist public school plays and concerts that ignore the true meaning of the season.

How many kids past the age of 5 really want to stand on a stage and pretend to sing Jingle Bell Rock anyway?  If they do, put them in a church event; they are not hard to find.

Don’t participate in office or leisure “holiday” celebrations.  When people ask why you are not coming, have the testicular fortitude to tell them that you simply don’t choose to partake in the secularization of Christmas.

Ask what “holidays” they are celebrating.  Let them know you would gladly come to a Christmas/Hanukkah party.

When a cashier or anyone else wishes you a happy “holiday” just nicely answer back “Merry Christmas” and/or “Happy Hanukkah”.  Throw in a “God Bless”.  Kill their Godlessness with subtle holiness.  Believe me, it makes an impact.

“Eh…eh…but what if people laugh at or ridicule me for this”?  Jesus was stripped to his underwear, beaten to within an inch of his life, then ridiculed, beaten some more and spat upon while dressed in a mock robe and a crown of thorns before dying for us.  We can’t handle a little snicker?

Finally, and this is the part that takes some action on our part:  start practicing your faith!  Pray a little more.  Get to your house of worship at least on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day.  If you’re Jewish get to Temple.

“Eh…Eh…between the shopping and all the obligations I have overloaded myself with, I just don’t have the time”.  Oh, you are too busy with overspending and stuffing your face to spend an hour with the Guest of Honor?

How about if we celebrated your birthday every year, but ignored you at the party?  Would you not question who the cake was for?

I can’t tell you how many of those numerous people I have heard annoyed that nobody says “Merry Christmas” but don’t step foot into a church, or even mention Jesus on his birthday.  These people are talkers, not doers.

There is NOTHING wrong with gifts, feasts, and trees with all the trimmings.  In fact, it’s proper as long as it’s done within your means.  We are celebrating a King!

However, I once heard Mother Angelica say on EWTN, “if you are too busy for God, you are too busy”.  She was right.  Talk soon.
